John Fahey papers [manuscript], 1944-1993 (bulk 1944-1946)

As a lieutenant in the U.S. Army, John Fahey was assigned the mission of re-educating German prisoners of war (POWs) during World War II. He served first at Camp White, Oregon from December 1944 to December 1945, and later in Stockton, California, from January through March 1946. The collection includes materials collected by Fahey while stationed at Camp White, Oregon and to a lesser extent, the Stockton Ordinance Depot, Stockton, CA, between the years 1944-1946. The bulk of the collection contains materials related to the re-education of German POWs, under the auspices of the Intellectual Diversion Program. Included are instructor outlines, German POW "student" papers, some texts, and various other teaching aids. The collection also includes documents regarding standard operating procedures of POW camps and information on Germany and German POWs. The remainder of the collection is composed of correspondences, both those of Fahey's and others which he collected, and research materials -- predominantly newspaper articles and War Department publications -- used in Fahey's own research on his experiences.
